    Beckford Peg

    DON DISTRICT BECKFORD PEG 2008

It’s 7-30 am on a Saturday and I’m wondering why I’m up at such an early time and sat in the Scout Headquarters. Then I remember that in January I volunteered to run the Beckford Peg Competition (Idiot!!) and worse still that we decided to revert back to an incident hike, with a series of questions to answer en-route.

The first team was due to leave the
33rd  headquarters was due out at 8-00am for their intrepid adventure to Oughtibridge!!

Instructions given and they set off on their journey along the Trans Pennine Trail to Checkpoint one where they found Garry from the
33rd  with the task of lighting candles. However there was a catch they had to light them from a distance being supplied with canes, rubber bands and a short supply of matches!!  From there they made their way to the Crown & Cushion pub, not for a drink I hasten to add, but to navigate a minefield created by the 82nd manning checkpoint two. Up Chapel Road in to the woods, to try and find Mick & Paddy flag raising from the 105th who had based themselves on Elliott Lane for checkpoint three.

Success was achieved and having negotiated checkpoint 3 it was off to checkpoint four to cook an omelette with the ingredients being provided by Jim from the 76th. Problems were encountered between checkpoint three and four with teams going off the route despite it being a straightforward part of the route. Back on route and off to find Mark from the 14th who had organised the simple task of transporting a ball down a course!! Carrying on in the woods to find checkpoint 6, manned by the 25th who were asking them to light a fire and toast a marshmallow all this in ten minutes and without any matches!!! I’m glad the leaders from the
25th brought their own snap with them!!

Carry on to the top of Grenoside avoiding the angry farmer who couldn’t grasp the fact that we had sent the kids out on their own and unfortunately they had got a little lost and ended up in his field of horses. No reasoning with the man who himself had not helped by rerouting the footpath out of his field despite it being clearly marked as running all the way along his field edge!!

To the top of Jawbone hill to find Joe from the 61st asking for compass bearings in the blazing sun!! Think the kids were more interested in the water we had provided them; either that or I don’t want to get lost with some of them that were out there!
On the finishing stretch and all downhill to checkpoint eight manned by Sean & Nick of the 32nd who gave them something to eat by way of a taste test. Onto Royds Row where Dan and Dan from the 231st had got a nice little game of darts organised!!

Nearly there now just one more checkpoint and I thank Mick, Paddy & Dave (82nd) for running this at short notice, as Mike was unable to make it due to a family bereavement. A quick football challenge followed by a nice walk by the side of the river to finish at Oughtibridge. Into the park and a fun challenge to cross the river aided or hindered perhaps by Jamie from the 82nd. Finally they had finished their intrepid adventure and reached their final destination for a well-earned rest or a chance to play Robin Hood with
    82nd's Bob!!

One by one the teams arrived with 6 of the 11 teams reaching the final checkpoint and 5 making it all the way to the end. With a cut off of 5pm the remaining teams were ferried to the end and the scores were added up and the results announced. Winners and runners up received a smaller version of the trophy with the winning team receiving the Beckford Peg. (A giant tent peg for those not in the know!)

Well done to all teams that entered on what was a scorching hot day. My thanks to all the leaders especially Steve at the 82nd, and parents for their help and to Simon & Alan from the 33rd who had to walk at an excruciatingly slow pace in their role as the sweep team!

Hope you all enjoyed the event.

    Thanks
