District Cub Camp and other Activities

    The Happening Cub Section….        16th July 2008

    Cub Leaders Information Weekend    13th  + 14th September 2008
Following the very successful Beaver Leaders Information Weekend, one has been organised for Cub Leaders.  It is at Hesley Wood and a leaflet and invitation has gone to all Leaders and Helpers in the Cub Section in South Yorkshire.
All Cub leaders are asked to make time to support this worthwhile event.
If you have any doubts – ask your Beaver Leaders – those who went had a very good weekend / day.

Since the AGM we have not had much time for District activities, however, we have been preparing a District Camp and the packs in the District have been busy with many outdoor activities. Here is just a flavour…
The 93rd – Stocksbridge and the 82nd – Chapeltown camped alongside each other at Walesby. I understand they got wet! Umbrella
The 32nd Stocksbridge also had a very wet campUmbrella, this time at Silverwood. They report a good time despite the weather.
14th  Grenoside have been to see the Police Helicopter.
33rd  Lane End Cubs & Scouts had 3 nights under canvas at Walesby over Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Through to the summer holidays they are spending their Pack nights (Fridays) at Hesley Wood.
105th High Green are having problems with leaders being available, myself and my District Cub Leaders have stepped in on occasions to keep things going. Despite the difficulties the Cubs remain enthusiastic.
Last weekend 21 Cubs from the 25th Ecclesfield had an adventurous weekend at Walesby . Rob tells me that pitching tents in the rain is no funUmbrella! I don’t know what he means.

Last weekend Cubs from 4 packs in the District had a very enjoyable Camp at Hesley Wood and yes, we also got very wet.Umbrella
On Thursday / Friday we had to search for high spots amongst the large and deep puddles to put tents on. Saturday was showery.
By Sunday the weather had cleared and a bright sunny day enabled us to put dry tents away.Sun
As all the activities were based around the senses, the Cubs made some sense out of a non-sense camp.
Friday started with a finding faces wide game. On the Saturday there was much tasting and smelling, observation, trail blazing, map work and other activity bases.
On Sunday, after a Scouts Own from DC Jim (thanks), the Cubs searched all around Hesley for pictures to match to senses.
The Fellowship continue to actively support the Cub section by providing a sensory backwoods cooking base. My thanks to them - and everyone who helped. In particular, thanks to Janette, Sylvia, Margaret and Joe for their extra hard work and support.
40 plus Cub Scouts, 12 Leaders and Helpers from the 14th, 33rd, 61st and 231st, plus 2 cooks and 2 Camp Leaders made it a great weekend and only one Cub said he had not enjoyed himself, (apparently he is always miserable so he doesn’t count).

After the Summer break we look forward to:

Outdoor Challenge and Outdoor Plus Challenge Camp

The District will be holding a Camp at Hesley Wood for Scouts wishing to qualify for their Outdoor Challenge and Outdoor Plus Challenge Badges (click links to see qualification needed for each badge). Both badges play an important role towards the 'new' qualification of The Gold Chief Scouts Award. The camp will be held from Friday 19th September through until Sunday 21st September and will give all Scouts on the Training the opportunity to learn and show their competence in the required elements for each badge. Each Scout will be expected to reach a certain level to qualify for their badge, therefore practicing the skills required at Troop Nights prior to the Camp would be helpful towards achieving the Badges. Each Troop will be expected to supply tentage for it's own participants and preferably (but not necessarily with prior agreement) Leaders and other equipment where possible. The maximum cost for this weekend is £25 per Scout including Camp Fees and Food etc. Please fill out the form below by the 4th September to confirm numbers. A £10 deposit per Scout will be required by the 4th September. Any problems in meeting any of the above please contact Steve. This Camp is designed for Scouts who haven't qualified through their own Troop activities, so whether you can attend as a Leader or not does not matter it's the Scouts we're after to progress through their Badges. Wouldn't it be lovely if we as a District could help every Scout achieve their Gold Chief Scouts Award before moving on to Explorers Hot

    Scout 5-a-side

Soccer ball Scouts from the 14th, 33rd, 61st, 76th, 82nd, 105th and 231st took part in this years 5-a-side competition at Concorde Sports Centre. A league where each team played all other teams provided qualification for the semi-finals for the 14th v 76th and the 33rd v 105th. A stunning goal ensured a place in the final for the 105th when the 33rd then took a strange decision to take one player off without a ready substitute playing the last minute 1 goal down with only 4 men. The match between the 14th and the 76th ended in a 1:1 draw and penalties took the 76th through to face the 105th. A competitive final was played also ending in a 1:1 draw and so to penalties (see the pictures below Camera) where some stunning goalkeeping from the 105th and 'friends' clinched the win.

The whole competition was played in a Scouting and sporting spirit and this year a new trophy for Scouting Sportsmanship was awarded to Joseph of the 231st for his honesty in that he hadn't scored a goal when the ref thought he had. The presentations where made by Matt who provided some lovely trophies. Mark did his usual organisation off pitch, planning fixtures and who played where. Matt and Steve refereed without too much controversy, apart from the match when a Scouts mobile phone rang Mobile Phone, he answered it and carried on playing whilst in mid conversation (presumably to his stock broker), and was then totally stunned when the ref confiscated the phone until the end of the evening.

Well done to everyone who took part. Soccer ball

    Splashdown 2008

6 Don District Groups enjoyed Splashdown this year with Scouts from 25th Ecclesfield, 61st Wincobank, 82nd Chapeltown, 105th and 231st Shiregreen camping for the weekend and 205th St Catherines visiting on Saturday. The Scouts enjoyed kayaks, canadian canoes, ride on canoes, sailing, grass sledging, mountain biking, surf boarding, kata kanu,  rowing and raft building as general activities. 82nd provided some basic canoe lessons for some of the Districts Scouts when requested. Saturday afternoon was the traditional Canoe Regatta with entries from the 82nd, 105th and 231st all entering into the spirit of the weekend, the 82nd taking many placings throughout the Regatta (despite the judges from the 105thWink) and the 82nd won the 13 year old race and a disqualification for missing a buoy in the 10 year old race. When questioned the judges referred the 82nd to Scouting for Buoys. All 3 Groups entered the George Borwick Trophy  with heat wins for the 82nd and 105th culminating in an exciting final with the 82nd finishing 2nd and the 105th finishing 3rd. The 82nd came 3rd overall in the White Ensign, the only Don District Group ever to win it being the 14th Grenoside sets up a challenge for all Don District Troops for the Silver Jubilee Year of Splashdown in 2009 to add their neckar colours to the White Ensign Flag. Saturday night was made for Dancing with a Disco for all to boogie the night away or just enjoy the ambience of a quiet (well apart from the kids) Summers evening  at the lakeside. Sunday morning commenced with the general activities and culminated just before lunch with the raft race once again entered by the 82nd, 105th and 231st, non of which sunk on the crossing across the lake, the 105th finishing 3rd, then to the Regatta Trophy Presentation, before lunch. County Commissioner Andy Moore popped in and said hello to everyone over lunch and an excellent weekend finishing after with more activities on the lake, before packing up at 4pm and heading home with some extremely pooped Scouts (and Leaders).

A special thanks to  Keith Joel and Phil Barton who organise this event for us year in year out, Mick Pears and his
105th team who put on the Canoe Regatta and Raft Race, Ian Holmes (231st) who is always in the middle of the organisation of this fantastic weekend and the Leaders and Young Leaders from 61st  and 82nd who gave their time to man bases throughout the weekend. 2009 sees the Silver Jubilee Year of Splashdown it would be great to fill the bank side with Don District and one of our groups take the White Ensign for overall points won in the Regatta, but as in all Scouting, it's the taking part that counts most.

    The George Borwick Trophy
Trophies are often presented and the reason for their name escapes us, Phil Barton explained after being asked by Scouts that George Borwick was the founder of Splashdown 24 Years ago and that many would remember George running the Scout and Guide Shop on Trippet Lane.

    Network for the District

At last – a Scout Network for Don District!!!

A meeting has been arranged to discuss the formation of a Network on Wednesday 9th July, 7.30pm at the Meeting Room at Hesley Wood.

(That’s to the left of the main reception if you didn’t know)

Present will be the ACC for Scout Network in South Yorkshire, Neil Hayward, and a few other people with experience of the Network.

The Network is open to anyone interested in Scouting who is between the ages of 18 and 25; see below for some bits  pinched off the Network pages!

    What do Networks do exactly?

Put simply, anything they want! Networks are involved in activities as wide ranging as kayaking, rock climbing, water skiing, international projects in places as inspiring as Chile, Libya and Italy, work with young people and help within the local community... the list of activities, projects and events is almost endless. You can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh as well as Scout Awards. By joining Scout Network a whole world of opportunity opens up to you. What you and your Network do is up to you.

Can I be a member of Network?

If you are aged between 18-25 then yes, of course you can! Some Network members will also be Leaders, Assistants or part of their local Scout Fellowship. Others will never have been involved in Scouting before – now is the time to start. Once you become a Network member, you can take part in pretty much any activity or event arranged by the 237 Networks there are across the UK.

OK, so how do Networks meet?

Well, Networks’ meeting times are flexible enough to suit their members. There are different types of Network – some meet to serve the needs of an area and take part in a wide variety of activities, whilst
others exist to fulfil certain roles such as a service crew at their local campsite, or concentrate on specific activities such as rock climbing.

Please pass this information on to anyone who you think may be interested, and then TURN UP AT THE MEETING!!
