ADC Cubs Held 9th MARCH, 2008 at Chapeltown Baths. Judges Joe Oglesby (1st Place) Jim Carroll (2nd Place) Pat Duggan (3rd Place Starter Chris Scorer & Certificates Kay Thompson (Assisted by Narda – Visitor) Records “Nick” Nicholson Gatherers Andrew Papka Janette Mellor Refreshments Norma False Start Rope Ken Crowhurst Steve Clayton Printing of Certificates Keith Tazzyman Provision of Medals Jim Carroll “Front of House” Admission, Programmes & Raffle Karen Crowhurst & Matthew Admission, programmes, raffle & tuck Jamie Brown Eight Packs took part, making 13 Teams. 62 Cubs entered but a couple were missing on the day. Needed to run Heats for all but the 8yr. old races. This left time for only one Fun Event, the “Reef Swim”, again two Heats and a Final. Trying to fit in another Fun Event would have given very little time for the Splash Session, which all the Cubs (and some Leaders) really enjoy.
All the Cubs were very well behaved, did their best and appeared to have a really good time. Trophies as follows:- Individual Championship Trophy: 1st Jack Smith (33rd) 2nd Daniel Harris (231st) 3rd Jacob Crofts (93rd) Relay Team Trophy: 1st 61st * 2nd 32nd Red 3rd 82nd Red Gala Team Trophy Joint Winners: 1st 33rd Red & 93rd ** 3rd 82nd Red 2nd 32nd Yellow 3rd 82nd Red * this was later disputed by 32nd Yellow as they thought they had won it but in fact they had been disqualified for setting off too early on the third length. Must look at a way to inform disqualified teams at future galas to avoid this disappointment. * at Gala, Trophy awarded to 33rd Red, 2nd Place to 93rd, but on later checking score sheet an error had been made, highlighting that this was in fact a Joint First Place. Teams have been notified. Medals were again given to the winners of the age-based races and the Individual Championship winner. Medals, Trophies and Certificates were presented by Jim Carroll & Andrew Papka. The Cubs who came 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their age-based races and in the Individual Championship also received a certificate. All entrants were given a “Joining In” certificate and a lolly pop at the end of the Gala.
Thanks also expressed to Chapeltown Baths for hosting this event and for the raffle prizes. I would also like to thank the individuals who provided other raffle prizes, you know who you are.
Once again, I can’t finish without thanking the Fellowship and other officials who helped on the day. As always, they did a grand job, playing a huge part in the success of this event. A special Thank You must go to Pat & Howard Swinburn who, despite having another commitment that day, still managed to offer assistance prior to the event.
Yours in Scouting, Sandra Harrison - Organiser. District Cub Scout Leader March 16 Well Done Pat - 50 Years of ScoutingVery well done to Pat on recognition of her outstanding contribution to Scouting.
As a Cub Leader having had direct benefit of her experience, I can only say very well done and thank you.

March 03 Leader Training Stewart Butler held a Training Assessment Day at Hesley Wood for those who needed help, advice or Modules signing off towards their Leader Training and Wood Badge. Training had almost ground to a halt within the District but with 10 Leaders using the Day to help them complete their Leader Training Stewart said "This has been a worth while day and we will repeat it soon for those who couldn't make it today". Training is now the responsibility of each Leader to make sure they complete their own Training and this should be done within 3 years of a Leaders appointment to that role. If you are not sure how to progress and complete your Training speak to Stewart who will help you every step of the way. Also speak to the other Leaders around for help especially your Section Leader, GSL, ADC, DC etc who will all be willing to help you complete the all important Modular Training Programme, much of which can be completed online using your every day skills used to fulfill your roles within your group. Modular Training Course Indoor Cooking CompetitionThe Indoor Cooking Competition was held on the 1st March at the 82nd HQ with 7 teams competing with teams from 32nd, 33rd, 76th, 82nd, & 231st. This Competition has produced a high standard of quality over the last few years and this year was no exception with once again food produced that could be served in a restaurant. The criteria was a fish dish and a dessert of the teams choice. Because fish is not usually on a Camp menu this gave the Scouts the opportunity to cook something new. Woks, frying pans and steamers were all used to produce these culinary fishy delights. From salads to boiled potatoes through rice accompanied various fillets of fish on to the plate. With an open choice of dessert jellied fruits, banana splits and other creative desserts were made. The dessert that stood out the most was the cheese cake decorated with a fleur de lys in chocolate - yummy. Marks were given for hygiene, food preparation, food quality and cleanliness amongst others. The standard was so high there were only 4 points separating the top 5 teams Thanks to all the Leaders and Young Leaders Nick and Logan for acting as Judges and made some of the following comments; Bob " There wasn't a bad meal amongst them" Logan "I don't normally eat fish but.........." Shaun "We should just get them to make these delicious sweets" Well done to all our Gourmet Chef Teams and the results are as follows; 1st 82nd Wolf 2nd 32nd 2nd 231st 4th 82nd Tiger 5th 33rd 6th 76th 7th 82nd Fox Jamie Oliver eat your heart out! February 23 Scout Leaders District MeetingA reminder that the Don District Scout Leaders Meeting has been changed from the 6th March 2008 to the 13th March because it clashes with The 1st Aid course being run by Peter Blakemore. The meeting will be hosted by Matt Hardman at 33rd Lane End, Chapeltown HQ, (map enclosed below) and will start as normal at 7.30pm. February 18 Don District Leaders WeekendDon District Leaders Weekend was held in the picturesque (I know Stockport and pictureesque in the same breath) of Abney, once found (lucky enough the local Pubs seemed to know where it was) the games commenced from pass the parcel through flower sweat bobbing, freezing spoons on strings (frozen specially by our loving District Staff) to late night twister and an early (cough) bed before being cooked breakfast by the spoon freezers, then setting of to Albert Dock in Liverpool where we joined 7,5002 Brownie (there were 7,5003 but one fell in) multi coloured hats (fell into Jim's pocket that is) for a trip round the Maritime Museum, a try out of the Real Ale Pubs (thanks to Meat's Real Ale Guide 2006), Lunch in the sun trap of the dock and then a Ferry Across the Mersey with 7,499 Brownie's all lining up and blocking the bar. There was a definite list to starboard and aft (the blunt end Sylvia) which is where the leaders sat. Once we found our land legs it was then off to another pub or two before emptying the Chinese Buffet to crys of Duck's off, luckily they fetched some more. Back to Abney Hall to dvd's and quizes. Another wonderful Don District DC team fry up before a local treasure hunt in the grounds of Abney Hall, returning for sarnies and then to finish off a trip to the unique under ground caves and air raid shelter in Stockport. Thanks to the District team who worked tirelessly to provide a fantastic weekend for everyone. Check out the photo's below; February 13 Indoor Cooking Competition - 1st MarchThe 2008 Indoor Cooking Competition will be held on 1st March at the 82nd Scout HQ on Burncross Road and will be open to Patrols of 4 who will cook a fish dish main course and a choice of dessert for a budget of £8. Leaders will be required to judge the competition, in return will receive tea and coffee on tap. The HQ will be open from 9.30am and cooking will commence at 10am with a Noon finish. Please email or contact Steve Clayton with Team numbers from each Group. The attached form below can be down loaded for use. To clarify teams above 4 are allowed (4-6 an ideal number) but the teams must provide a dish for teesting for the judges and 4 other meals for eating themselves. We have followed this principle for a few years now so that Scouts can join in rather than be precluded from the event. Similarly teams of under 4 are allowed but the same number of dishes must be prepared. Update: Teams entered to date are 32nd 1-2 teams, 33rd 1 team, 82nd 3 teams, 231st 1 team. Please let Steve know if you have a team you want to enter. STOP PRESS 32nd have confirmed 1 team, 76th are entering 1-2 teams, unfortunately we will be missing usual combatants 61st who have their birthday Campfire and 105th who sadly hadn't received the date change.
